Hi everyone,
i'm a little bit confused about the following update scenario.... :/
Datecenter
Cluster
ESXi1---->SAN1
ESXi2---->SAN1
VUM(virtual maschine)
ESXi3----->local Storage
vCSA 5.1
So ESXi3, hosting the vCenter, is not part of the cluster and not connected to the shared storage.
- VUM requires vCenter to update the hosts. That is no problem in case of upgrading ESXi 1 and 2, i just have to vMotion the VUM to the one left over. But i cannot update ESXi3, because then i have to shut down ESXI3 AND vCenter, whereby VUM will not work. I can also not move the vCenter to another Host because its not connected to the shared storage and because we have no Storage vMotion (Essentials+).
- In the past i did it by updating the third ESXi manually with a CD on the host itself. This was because HP published a new version of his Custom image (VMware-ESXi-5.1.0-799733-HP-5.32.5) which we are using for our HP dl380g8 servers. So i imported that image into the VUM to upgrade ESXi Host 1&2 and upgraded ESXi 3 manually by inserting a CD and doing an update/upgrade (from 5.0 to 5.1)
- I BELIEVE, i need the HP Custom Image, so that i have all the drivers already included for my HP Environment, right?
- Alternatively i would be able to use the standard vmware ESXi image and include alle drivers from here manually? Would that result in the exact same image as HP build it?
- VUM is showing some updates, e.g. "ESXi510-201303401-BG" with the latest Build 984358. Does that include all updates before?
So the questions i have are:
- Can i do an update via VUM (and with CD for ESXi3) WITH THE STANDARD vmware ESXi image/patch over my HP Custom Image ESXi Hosts and all HP customized things like drivers (etc...??) will remain or will that override the complete installations of ESXi i will be left with a standard vmware ESXi installation without any HP customization?
- If that is the case, do i have to build a custom image on my own?
- Because HP has updated its custom image in Feb. but seems still to be on build 799733?!? which seems to be the same as when i'm staying on the standard vmware image build 799733?? But the last patch from vmware "Patch ESXi510-201303401-BG" says 984358.
- So i have to download the standard vmware ESXi image and include alle drivers from here manually, build "my own" custom image and import that image into VUM to update ESXi1&2 and burn it on CD to update ESXi3?
- Is there any possibility to Update ESXi3 also via VUM??? The only way seems for me deploying a new vCenter with VUM (on ESXI1or2), disconnect ESXi3 from the current vCSA, attach it to the new vCenter, update it, and mount it to the original vCSA again... :/
