Unity mode exits on all running guests

I run between 1-4 guests at any given time under Workstation 9 on a Windows 7 host on my Sony Vaio Z laptop.  These guests are a range of Ubuntu versions.  I would like to run them in Unity mode, and for the most part this works fine.  However, throughout the day, Unity mode will randomly exit on all of the guests at the same time.  I then have to restart the VMWare Tools service on each of them before they can be put back into Unity mode.  I have contacted VMWare support on this issue many times over the past couple weeks and they keep telling me Ubuntu's Unity is not supported, despite repeated explanations that I am not running Ubuntu's Unity desktop on any of the guests.  Also, the fact that VMWare Tools dies on all of the guests simultaneously seems to suggest it is not an issue with the guests exclusively.  This has been more difficult to diagnose because I cannot reliably recreate the issue.  It happens at least once a day, but I have been unable to determine a pattern.  I usually notice it has happened when I wake up the laptop from sleep, but I can suspend/wake it 10 times in a row to try to recreate the issue and it will continue to work fine.  Any thoughts on how to resolve this?
