The best way to update the VMs is via Update Manager. You update the Hosts and this will in turn contain the latest VM Tools to update the VMs. Do you have this in your environment ?

No, we don't use it. We update via esxcli, our two esx have the latest pathc. The tools however remained in Version 911xxx.
